Stamp Duty is essentially a tax on documents and in former times was imposed when the documents were stamped by the appropriate revenue official, hence the name. The tax principally applies to transactions and shares although, other transactions involving the contractual transfer of property may also caught. Most of us become aware of stamp duty when we buy our first house, and in fact the impost is not stamp duty at all but its sister tax which is stamp duty land tax, or SDLT. We can assist with ensuring your compliance as well as, where appropriate mitigation of this tax.
